Making God in the Image of Man
According to the Bible, man was made in the image of God {Gen. 1:26} BUT for several generations now many professing to know this God have been diligently working to remake Him in their image. Ignoring what God has revealed about Himself, many modern "Christians" are seeking to redefine Him into a being just slightly larger than them. The god, even of many modern evangelicals, is no longer an all-knowing, all-powerful, sovereign, holy God who is to be feared. {1 Pet. 2:17} He has been demoted to the position of a big-pal-in-the-sky who exists only to meet our needs. Since that is who many now think He is, there is no further need to approach
Him with reverence and awe. There is no need {with Moses} to "take off our shoes because we are on holy ground." {Ex. 3:5} There is no reason {with John} to "fall at His feet." {Rev. 1:17} The biblical truth that man was created for the purpose of bringing glory to God {1 Cor. 10:31} is mostly gone from modern Christianity. It has been replaced by the notion that God exists for man. For the most part "Christianity" has become man-centered rather than God-centered.
The problem with this approach is that this fictitious man-make god is NOT the God we will stand before on the Day of Judgment. What will we do when we learn that this One we have whittled-down to be our buddy is really a holy "consuming fire?" {Heb. 12:29}
